Chelsea's Terry named as England captain

In a surprise move John Terry has retained the England captaincy on a permanent basis.
Coach Fabio Capello chose the Chelsea defender to lead the national side ahead of favourite Rio Ferdinand.
Manchester United stopper Ferdinand was named vice-captain.
"It means the world to me to retain the armband," said the 27 year old who was told the news by Capello after England's training session on Tuesday morning.
"To get the armband back is a huge achievement for me.
"It was about an hour ago, just after training. The manager called the whole squad together and told us as a whole.
"For me to get it above the likes of him (Ferdinand) and the other players in the squad is a great honour."
Capello said: "John's big personality is why I chose him but Rio is also important for the team which is why I made him vice-captain."
"Rio, when he was captain, played very well - the same level as John," he added. "It was not easy for me to choose because they are very good players."

AC Milan willing to sell £70M Kaka to Chelsea

AC Milan are willing to SELL Kaka to Chelsea - for £70 million.
The Italians would not be able to turn the offer down if Roman Abramovich was ready to splash the cash, and they have let Chelsea know.
But Big Phil Scolari would prefer to sign Robinho - and is waiting to see whether Real Madrid will buckle.
The 24-year-old Brazilian striker is Scolari's first choice, but Kaka is obviously still on Chelsea's wish-list

Cole: Chelsea will have Man Utd worried

Joe Cole is convinced Chelsea will have rattled Premiership rivals Manchester United with the way they thumped Portsmouth on Sunday.
Cole said: "It is early days and you can't take too much from the first game. However, we watched United beat Fulham 5-1 a couple of years ago and we were thinking, 'Look at them, they look strong'.
"They must have watched us against Portsmouth and thought we looked strong.
"The first game is over. It's great for everyone and great for the manager because of all the expectation.
"But this was a great start - opening day of the season, you always want to be at home and you want to have a good start. This is a cracking squad and this is a cracking result."

PSG willing to splash out on Chelsea striker Anelka

Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka is a target for PSG.
After splashing out on Claude Makelele and Ludovic Giuly, PSG president Charles Villeneuve is willing to open his chequebook one more time before the summer transfer deadline falls.
Villeneuve is keen on Anelka and also Inter Milan midfielder Patrick Vieira.

Cole welcomes Deco competition at Chelsea

Joe Cole has no problem competing with Deco for a place in Chelsea's midfield.
"He is fantastic, an experienced international and a top player, we are very lucky to have him in our squad," said Cole.
But with the extra midfielder comes greater competition to break into the first team, something Cole is relishing.
"I have had that all my career at Chelsea and I love the competition," he added. "It is great having new players and new stars coming in and trying to learn off them everyday.
"I love the competition in training and it is good that we got the result today and that we will be okay next week."

Chelsea's Cole: England has excellent captaincy candidates

Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole says teammate John Terry and Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand are both excellent candidates for the England captaincy.
He said: "What are the qualities of Ferdinand and Terry? Both are very similar. They have both got their attributes, are both well respected by the players.
"They are both top internationals at the peak of their game, experienced, vocal in the dressing room, both lead by example.
"They have both got all the attributes you would need - as have Steven Gerrard, as has Frank Lampard, as has Gareth Barry, and there are many others who will be in with a shout.
"But, whoever gets the nod, the boys will be right behind them."
Cole insisted: "Whoever the manager picks is going to be the right decision. You need the captain more in the bad times than in the good, the man who steps forward and takes responsibility.
"We have got so many leaders in the squad now, the Liverpool captain (Gerrard), the Chelsea captain (Terry), the Manchester United captain [Ferdinand has led United in the past, but Gary Neville is the club captain] - three out of the four top teams in the country.
"I am sure, irrespective of who takes the armband, there will still be another five or six leaders out there who will go out there and take us forward."

Cole insists no concerns over Chelsea future

Joe Cole insists there's no concerns over new contract talks at Chelsea.
Cole, 26, has put his contract talks on hold but insists he will stay beyond the two years left on his deal, even if Robinho arrives to offer a like-for-like option for Chelsea's new manager.
Putting negotiations to one side when the season starts is normal club policy, and Cole is happy to concentrate on matters on the pitch at the moment.
"I just wanted to put it to bed now," he said. "Obviously we wanted to get it sorted out this year but with the new manager coming in and players coming in and out there wasn't enough time.
"I love it here, the club wants to sign me and there won't be any problems on that front. I just want to concentrate on my performances and play well because it's not nice for the fans to have an ongoing thing. But I will be a Chelsea player for the rest of my career."

Lampard: Premiership fans convinced me over Chelsea stay

Frank Lampard has revealed how Premiership fans - on a whole - convinced him about signing a new contract at Chelsea.
Lampard, who penned a new Blues deal last week, said: "The letters I've received have been totally overwhelming. Thousands have been sent to the training ground from Chelsea fans, people also sent me poems from Ireland.
"I've had letters from all sorts of people who've suffered and that helps me even more.
"It's also important that I say I had lots of correspondence from Liverpool, Manchester United and West Ham fans.
"That was a breath of fresh air for me, because sometimes football can make you cynical about each other and you forget about the real things which matter.
"When I got a letter from a West Ham fan sending his condolences, and speaking in a certain way, it made me realise what's important.
"Sometimes you can relate more to those who've been through a similar thing to yourself. It made me realise I was in the right environment."

Chelsea boss Scolari: Anelka too timid

Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari wants sports psychologist Professor Regina Brandao to work on bringing Nicolas Anelka out of his shell.
He explained: "I've sent her technical information about the team but I feel it's important the players talk with her in London.
"Anelka is too shy and quiet and I want him to be more aggressive and explosive.
"But because he is timid, sometimes he accepts things and I want to change his mind."

Scolari: Deco my top Chelsea target

Chelsea boss Phil Scolari says Deco was always his top target.
Scolari said: "Deco was my first choice. When I signed my contract I told Roman Abramovich I wanted one player, Deco.
"I said that if he wanted us to win we needed this man. He is the player who is different and who gives the team balance."

Chelsea knock back Essien request to change numbers

Michael Essien has been knocked back by Chelsea over a change of shirt number.
The Ghana international hoped to switch from his current No 5 shirt to the No 4 jersey vacated by Claude Makelele, who recently signed for Paris St Germain.
But Essien's No 5 shirt has proved one of the most popular items in the club shop over the summer.
Chelsea did not want to disappoint fans who had splashed out on the new kit with Essien's name and number emblazoned on it.

Chelsea make new £24M bid for Real Madrid's Robinho

Chelsea have made a fresh bid for Real Madrid's wantaway winger Robinho.
Chelsea have made a new £23.6million bid for Robinho. It's almost £5m more than their last offer and will sorely tempt the Spanish giants, despite the fact president Ramon Calderon wants to keep him.
But Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is keen to capture his countryman and will be backed all the way by Roman Abramovich's billions.
Real want £35 million for Robinho and the gulf between the two clubs could mean this deal goes to the transfer deadline wire of August 31.

Chelsea to cut losses and send Shevchenko to AC Milan

Chelsea are ready to smooth a deal for Andriy Shevchenko to return to AC Milan.
Blues chief executive Peter Kenyon flew out to meet Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani in Sardinia yesterday to discuss Sheva's return.
The Ukraine striker, 31, has been a flop since his £30.8million move to Stamford Bridge two years ago.
He has hit just nine League goals, while being paid £130,000 a week as a sub.
He is not in new boss Phil Scolari's plans and even owner Roman Abramovich agrees it is time to cut his losses.
Galliani said: "Shevchenko has remained in our hearts."

Chelsea willing to pay £85M for Liverpool's Torres

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is prepared to pay a mind-boggling £85 MILLION for Liverpool star Fernando Torres.
Chelsea's billionaire owner was an admiring onlooker here on Sunday night as the brilliant Liverpool striker dominated Spain's European Championship victory over Germany.
Torres was man of the match in every way and how Chelsea would love to prise him away from Anfield.
Their first reported offer of £50m was laughed away by Liverpool and Torres has admitted he has no wish to quit Merseyside.
However, if Liverpool hint at any weakness, Abramovich would be ready to pay more than Real Madrid's planned £70 million bid for Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.
A weekly salary of more than £200,000 a week is not out of the question as Abramovich is determined to bankroll his club into European winners.

Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho has cast doubt on plans to land Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.
"This season? I don't think so," said the Special One. "Why won't he? Well, it's not because we don't want him to, but I'm sure Chelsea and Chelsea's officials don't want to sell him.
"However for the next season it will be easier for him to join me at Inter.
"I'm 100 per cent sure in 2009/2010 he will be playing here."

"Italy is a beautiful country but I am not due to meet anyone here."

Chelsea boss Scolari ready for media pressure

New Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is no doubt well aware that one of the more taxing and tiresome aspects of working in the Premier League will be the intrusiveness of the tabloid press.
Their penchant for pun-filled snappy headlines and nicknames is likely to grate on Luiz Felipe Scolari - and indeed was reputedly one of the factors that dissuaded him from taking the England manager's job in 2006, when the Football Association were seeking a successor to Sven-Goran Eriksson and eventually settled for Steve McClaren.
Now Scolari, recently announced as Chelsea boss in succession to Avram Grant, says he "will not allow anyone in England or anywhere else" to change his name to 'Big Phil'.
"I might find it hard adapting to the ways of football in England, to the rain, and maybe to the food. But I will do it".
"But one thing I cannot adapt easily to is when they call me Big Phil.
"I don't want to see my name spelled with a 'Ph', I want to see it spelled with an F. It is Felipe, not Phil. I will not allow anyone in England or anywhere else to change my name."

Schalke insist no Chelsea approach for Rakitic

Schalke's general manager Andreas Muller has confirmed the club have not yet received an approach from Chelsea for Croatia winger Ivan Rakitic.
Midfielder Jermaine Jones has also been linked with Manchester United, but Muller insists there have been no offers from the Premier League for the duo.
"Up until now, no club has waved a fat cheque for millions in front of me," Muller said. "Basically we don't want to sell either, and also Schalke is not the worst place for them."

Chelsea up contract offer to Deco

Chelsea have offered improved terms to Deco to beat Inter Milan for the Barcelona midfielder.
Chelsea have offered Deco a deal worth an incredible £92,000-a-week after tax to convince him to move to Stamford Bridge.
The Portugal midfielder is still to choose whether he will join Inter Milan or Chelsea having already decided to bring his four-year spell at Barcelona to an end.
But Chelsea are hoping their massive contract offer, which is 25 per cent more than he received at the Nou Camp, will secure the transfer.

Mourinho determined to clinch Inter deal for Chelsea's Lampard

Jose Mourinho is determined to land Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard for Inter Milan.

The Italian giants had a £6.6million offer rejected by Chelsea last week. But Mourinho is desperate to make the England midfielder his first major signing.
Chelsea have told Inter that no deal will be done for Lampard until Phil Scolari has assessed his squad.
The new manager is due to arrive in London tomorrow.

"Now I am looking for possibilities - at some point I will take a decision either to look for another club or stay in Barcelona.
"I don't have much to prove with Barcelona. I know I am still marketable and this summer we will meet with the club officials to ensure that I am not pushed."
Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham have all been linked with a move for the talented hitman, who is expected to command a fee of around £15m should Barcelona decide to cash in on him.

Luiz Felipe Scolari is set to make Barcelona midfield schemer Deco his first signing as new Chelsea manager in a £12 million deal.
The Portugal ace has agreed terms with the Blues and the deal is expected to be finalised following his country's exit from Euro 2008.
New Stamford Bridge boss Scolari is confident Deco will sustain the form he showed during the three games he played in Switzerland.
A source said: "It's just a matter of time to conclude the affair and it should be before the end of this week."

Man City, Chelsea target Ronaldinho wants Premiership move

Barcelona superstar Ronaldinho wants to continue his career in England.
But the Brazil superstar refused to give any hints whether he fancies a move to Chelsea or Manchester City.
Megabucks City owner Thaksin Shinawatra has offered Barcelona ace Ron a whopping £30million in wages.
But speculation over a move to Chelsea has increased following the Blues' appointment of former Brazil boss Luiz Felipe Scolari and a plea from Barca pal and Chelsea target Deco to join him in London.
Ronaldinho, 28, said: "Every player would love to play in such a competitive championship as the English league.
"I'm happy because almost all the teams want me to play for them.
"I admire Scolari a lot and I hope he can make all his dreams come true. I wish him well."

How England let Chelsea boss Scolari slip away?

New Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari was all ready to take the England job in 2006, it has been revealed.
A key negotiator said: "The FA had an undertaking from Scolari that he would take the job when negotiations opened in April 2006. But major mistakes were made in the negotiation process. He was extremely uncomfortable about announcing a deal prior to the World Cup, especially with the prospect of Portugal facing England.
"But the FA were adamant a deal had to be announced. In truth, it made no sense whatsoever.
"The big mistake the FA made was to allow Scolari to leave the room without signing a contract or letter of intent - and that gave him time to change his mind.
"The opportunity was there and the FA didn't take it."

The Parc des Princes outfit approached Makelele for the first time in summer 2007, but the midfielder decided against returning to France.
It appears the former France star, who announced his international retirement following Les Bleus elimination at Euro 2008, is ready to embark on a final challenge with PSG.
Paris' new president Charles Villeneuve wants the club to bounce back after two catastrophic seasons and signing domestic stars Makelele and Lilian Thuram is reportedly his priority.

Although Liverpool lag some way behind Chelsea and United in terms of spending power, the thought of cashing in on Torres, the striker who scored 33 goals for them last time out, in his debut season, would cause uproar among their support.
Chelsea have been told that one of the Americans is willing to let Torres go for the right price and are planning to test Liverpool's resolve with a bid.

Ronaldinho wants to play for Scolari at Chelsea

Barcelona ace Ronaldinho wants to follow Luiz Felipe Scolari to Chelsea.
Big Phil will contact Brazilian playmaker Ronnie in the next few days to assess his hunger and desire.
Scolari is aware that signing Ronaldinho, 28, from Barcelona is a huge gamble - after he was plagued by injury and personal problems last season.
Ronaldinho's brother and agent, Roberto de Assis, said: "At the moment Ronaldinho is taking a complete break at home in Porte Alegre.
"There are options for next season and obviously he knows Scolari very well and they have enjoyed great success together.
"We'll see what happens but my brother will be ready for next season."
Assis has met with Chelsea in the past about a possible move for Ronaldinho - who is also a target for new Manchester City boss Mark Hughes.
But the chance to link up with the coach who brought the brilliant best out of him with Brazil will be very tempting.

The Brazilian, who starts his £6million-a-year job at Stamford Bridge on 1 July, has already begun drawing up a shopping list of the game's top stars.
Backed by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich's millions, Scolari looks certain to move for £10m-rated Barcelona star Deco, who has thrived during his time under the Portugal coach.
Other targets are likely to include Valencia's David Villa at £32m, AC Milan's Kaka at £50m and Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o at £16m.
But Scolari will also be focused on keeping Chelsea's top players and will start by convincing defender Ricardo Carvalho to sign a new deal.
