Mikel:Up for Upton Park

The players arrive at Cobham this morning for their penultimate training session before facing West Ham on Saturday, and John Mikel Obi is determined to use that game as an opportunity to return to winning ways.
The Nigerian played the full 120 minutes against Tottenham in Sunday's Carling Cup Final defeat, and, having had a day off on Monday to recover, has found the squad spirited as preparations begin for the weekend.
'It has been good, we just have to put what has happened behind us and make sure we move forward and everything from here goes well,' said the 20-year-old.
He believes the disappointment felt from Sunday can be used as a channel for success in the remaining three competitions.
'Yes, I think that's what we're doing, we had a talk among ourselves as players, and we know we could have done better in the Cup Final,' he said. 'It was obviously disappointing, so we have to make sure we come back victorious.'
Our visit to Upton Park in two days represents the first opportunity to register a win, and is a welcome return to league action after a run of three successive cup games.
With almost a full complement of players available, Mikel, who has so far made 29 appearances this season, appreciates the problems in team selection faced by Avram Grant and his coaching staff.
'There is a lot of competition in the team now, and you have to know you can't play every game. There are a lot of big players, good players. Everyone in the team is a good player, and you can't keep them out for a long time,' he explained.
As for West Ham, Mikel remembers December's clash, in which we ran out 1-0 winners, and hopes that we can perform with as much authority as we did that day.
'I think the game at Stamford Bridge was a good one, and we played very well,' he recalled. 'We have to go to Upton Park and make sure we play well and take the three points.'

AC Milan coach Ancelotti on Chelsea shortlist

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti is under consideration for Avram Grant's job at Chelsea.
Ancelotti and Barcelona's Frank Rijkaard make-up Blues owner Roman Abramovich's shortlist.
Ancelotti and Rijkaard are two of only five people to win the European Cup as players and managers, but the Dutchman is the preferred candidate.

Barcelona coach Rijkaard wants Chelsea talks

Sources close to Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard says he would consider a move to Chelsea at the end of this season.
A source close to Rijkaard confirmed yesterday that he would consider shelving those plans if the Chelsea job becomes available.
He said: "Frank is leaving Barcelona at the end of the season. That has always been the plan and at the moment it is 100 per cent that he will. "
"The only thing that could change his mind is if they win the title or the European Cup again and then there would be a decision to be made."
"He's got a year left at Barcelona but in the past he has always said Chelsea are a big club. Of course he would be interested if the job became available."

Kaka headlines £100M Chelsea shopping list

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is ready to bankroll an amazing £100 million summer spending spree - with AC Milan star Kaka and Valencia striker David Villa headlining his shopping list.
Abramovich has promised Grant a £100 million warchest if he can keep Chelsea's rocking ship afloat.
Abramovich has made it clear to Grant that he must win something this season, or at least finish in the top four, and if he can do that then he will handed the money to bring in his own players and build his own team.
A £25 million bid will be lodged for World and European Player of the Year Kaka and £15 million offered to Valencia for their unsettled striker Villa.

Abramovich will move Grant back to Chelsea football director's role

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich won't bomb Avram Grant out of the club should he decide he is not the man for the manager's job at the end of this season.
If he is replaced as manager, he will be offered the opportunity to return to the role he first took at Chelsea - as the director of football.

Terry feels fan's pain

As players return to training today following Sunday's defeat, their captain has joined the calls to quickly put the Carling Cup defeat behind them while empathising with supporters' disappointment.
John Terry is the one player on the pitch at the weekend who was part of Chelsea's last cup final defeat. He has been on the winning side in three finals since so has experienced both sides of the coin and saw no lack of desire before the game.
'Speaking to the lads, they desperately wanted it but we went out on the pitch and it didn't happen,' he said.
'I am really disappointed for the fans who travelled and supported us throughout this competition. It is killing me inside and I know they are feeling exactly the same as me and the lads.
'People say the Carling Cup doesn't matter. Tell that to our players. Every year we put a strong side out and that's what got us to the final.
'My message to the boys is that we've got to pick ourselves up. We've got an important game away to West Ham, the Champions League, the FA Cup, it's all coming so quick. We have to get it out of our system. We come back in on Tuesday and we go again and it is down to people like myself, Lamps and Didier to pick people up and get them going.'
Terry attempted to use his powers of motivation on the Wembley pitch during the intervals in action and he spoke to the media about that after the final whistle.
'That's part of my role,' he said. 'I will say my thing, Lampsy will say his, Steve Clarke his, the manager will speak. I felt as though I had to speak and I did.
'We didn't keep the ball as well as we can do. Overall we just weren't at the races. That's the most disappointing thing; we have gone to some tough places in this competition and blowing it on the day, it is not a good feeling.'
He points to a collective lack of awareness defensively for the goal that decided the match and refuses to entertain any excuses for the performance, including the selection procedure.
'Since the manager has taken over he keeps things very close to his chest and none of us knew the team until the day. That's how it has been in every game so it has been no different for us, no change, no excuse.
'That's the way it has got to be, it keeps everyone guessing and everyone on their toes and as a group of players we have to deal with that.
'The determination, the passion, the will to win is still there. In that dressing room there are faces that want to win and hate losing - hate losing in training, hate losing in small games, hate losing in big games.'

Chelsea's Lampard in heated Grant row

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard had a furious row with coach Avram Grant over his first team future, it has been revealed.
There has been a heated exchange between Lampard and the manager after Grant told him he could no longer expect to play in every game.
Grant suggested on Friday that the injuries Lampard has suffered this year could be the price he is paying for those remarkable record-breaking appearance runs in the past.

Pep Guardiola (current coach of Barca B), Luis Enrique and Eusebio Sacristan were all put forward to Mourinho as Mourinho already knows Guardiola and Luis Enrique from the first spell he had at Barca as Sir Bobby Robson's assistant. potential assistants - ahead of Rijkaard's current No2 Johan Neeskens.Mourinho already knows Guardiola and Luis Enrique from the first spell he had at Barca as Sir Bobby Robson's assistant.

No time to dwell

Joe Cole believes we must get over the Carling Cup defeat to Tottenham quickly in order to progress in other competitions.
Next up is a return to Premier League action after three consecutive cup games, and Cole insists nothing but a Win at his old club West Ham will do.
'We're very disappointed today, we just have to pick ourselves up for next week,' he explained. 'We'll go and digest it and talk about where we went wrong.'
Cole began the game as a substitute, coming on in the 100th minute during extra time, after which he created several opportunities for his side. He had been impressed with Didier Drogba's first half goal, that made the Ivorian the first man to score in three League Cup finals.
'It was a great finish, but we didn't really kick on from there. What can you do? Now we focus on Saturday and the next league game,' he said.
We lie nine points behind leaders Arsenal with a game in hand, and with Arsene Wenger's side and Manchester United still to visit Stamford Bridge. Cole was clear on the message from Avram Grant following yesterday's defeat.
'The message is Saturday we have to win, and keep looking at the next game and the next game. "We have to take our hats off to Tottenham, they won the trophy today, but we move on and go forward.'

Grant tells Ramos: Chelsea job tougher than Spurs

Chelsea boss Avram Grant insists he has a much more difficult job than Tottenham coach Juande Ramos.
Before yesterday's Carling Cup defeat, Grant said: "All the success Jose (Mourinho) had does make my job very hard. Since Roman Abramovich came, Chelsea have won a lot of trophies and spent more money than any side in history. But at big clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal or Man United there is always a commitment to win titles. It doesn't matter that I am the manager or that Jose was.
"It is different coming in at the bottom of the league to somewhere like Spurs, even though they are also a big club."

Reaction:The Analysis Begins

As he began to pick his way through the pieces of Chelsea's broken Carling Cup hopes, Avram Grant highlighted one Wembley moment that especially disappointed him on an afternoon to forget.
Chelsea have grown used to winning finals when we reach them, but not as used as we have been to beating Tottenham down the years. That makes getting over this defeat all the harder but Grant has promised to begin by looking in depth at the performance while remaining positive about the rest of the season ahead.
The Chelsea manager admitted our opponents had the chances to make the difference before they did, not least when Didier Zokora was denied by Petr Cech in the second half, but having rallied from a sticky opening, the manner with which our London rivals got back into the game was disappointment number one.
'We didn't start the game very well, but when we scored the goal, from then until the second half, when the goal was conceded, Tottenham didn't create any chances,' Grant said.
'Then came the decision of the penalty and Tottenham came back into the game. I think it was a rash decision. Not every time that you touch the ball with your hand is it a penalty. I think you can think it over.'
Grant paired the handball verdict against Wayne Bridge with the final decision of the game, the one to blow the final whistle just as Salomon Kalou was found by John Terry in front of goal.
'But we cannot take the time back, we lost a final and that is what it is important,' Grant continued.
With the game at 1-1 as extra-time began, it was Jonathan Woodgate's header from a free-kick that ended Chelsea's 52-game sequence of not losing having taken leads.
Spurs had been the most recent side to overturn a deficit against us, back in November 2006, but Grant refused to point a finger at any individual for a defensive lapse at the deciding moment.
'There are always personal mistakes in football but we win as a team and we lose as a team. We will look at it and see what we can take out of this game.
'It is the first game that Drogba and Anelka played together. I think it is going to be a good combination but it was not an easy game for them today. They did their best.
'I wanted to play Anelka out wide because he is a creative player but he can also come to be the striker at the right moment. It worked sometimes.'
Grant was also willing to defend Chelsea's long ball approach at times which was counter to his preferred style of play.
'It was in the last 15 minutes of the game. With many strikers we thought maybe we could create something this way. Sometimes the players feel we could be more dangerous this way but it is not our way of playing. When we are 2-1 down, I understand it.'
Keeping his chin up, Grant refused to accept his best chance of silverware in his first Chelsea season had passed.
'We are in all the other three competitions. It was not easy to come to this final because in most of the games we didn't have players and it is good for us to be in a final but it is not good to lose a final. But we will try to do our best in the other three competitions.'

Dealing with final decisions

With a larger pool of players available than at any time this season, Chelsea's line-up for this afternoon's Carling Cup Final has attracted plenty of speculation. Michael Ballack gives an insight into the thoughts of top players when team selection time comes.
The Africans are back and the injury list has cleared just in time for the Wembley showpiece. In the midfield alone, there are four extra players ready for selection compared with the game at Goodison Park last month that sent Chelsea into today's Final, Ballack included.
'It is exciting, we will see who is playing. I always expect that I will play but I think everybody thinks that,' he smiled, talking before Avram Grant revealed his decisions to the squad.
'The manager does not have to explain to everybody why they are not playing. I think every player has to know what the situation is and deal with the situation, even if you don't play.
'In your mind, you have had to deal with it before. Every player will react differently, some speak more, but everybody knows it can happen that you don't play, even if you are a good player.'
One year ago, Ballack was a Carling Cup Final hero for Chelsea, supplying the perfect through ball for Didier Drogba to equalise against Arsenal and playing the whole of the 2-1 win.
However his season ended prematurely through injury and he had to wait until a Carling Cup quarter-final against Liverpool in December to return.
'Eight months out is a long time and I want to show in the next week and months why Chelsea bought me.
'I never thought that I wouldn't be coming back but I have known players that take one-and-a-half to two years to return and this was in my mind. When you are three or four months out injured and you don't make steps forward, that is very frustrating.
'When I did come back, I was captain for a short period and that gave me a lot of confidence and a good feeling that I can be a big part of the team.'
While Ballack was awaiting to discover if he is one of today's chosen midfielders, Ricardo Carvalho was similarly hoping for a place in central defence.
If selected, he would love to repeat his 35-yard winner against Spurs last April at Stamford Bridge, although our Portuguese star isn't promising.
'It was a good shot and we won 1-0 from my shot,' Carvalho told Chelsea TV.
'I will try to do my best but first in my mind is not to concede goals, play well and give good balls to the players playing in front. We have great players in front of me in midfield and they can score from 35 yards.'
